They handle complex tasks and interact with other systems without direct human supervision. This shift demands a new approach to how we manage digital identities and access control.

Understanding the Rise of AI Agents

AI agents differ from traditional human identities in several important ways. Humans have static identities tied to legal documents or organizational roles. AI agents often have dynamic, ephemeral identities created on the fly for specific tasks. They operate autonomously, learning and adapting over time, and can delegate tasks to other agents. Their access rights are fine-grained and context-dependent, requiring continuous verification. This complexity creates challenges for existing Identity and Access Management (IAM) systems designed primarily for humans.

Consider an AI agent monitoring patient health data in a hospital. It might detect early signs of illness and alert doctors without any human input. Or think about an AI that monitors financial transactions, identifying fraud and freezing accounts in real time. These agents act faster and with more precision than humans. However, their identities and access must be managed securely to prevent misuse or attack.

Why Traditional IAM Falls Short

Traditional IAM frameworks rely heavily on static credentials, fixed roles, and centralized authorities. These frameworks do not accommodate the dynamic nature of AI agents, their need for autonomous decision-making, or the scale at which they operate.

The research paper “A Novel Zero-Trust Identity Framework for Agentic AI” points out that this gap leaves organizations vulnerable to identity silos, fragmented security policies, and limited auditability when managing AI agents.

The paper highlights that AI agents require decentralized authentication methods, zero-trust principles, and verifiable credentials to prove their identity and authority without relying on a single centralized source. The Proposed Zero-Trust Identity Framework

To address these challenges, the research paper proposes a comprehensive zero-trust identity framework specifically designed for agentic AI. It focuses on several core principles.

First, decentralized identifiers (DIDs) allow AI agents to have persistent, verifiable identities that are not dependent on a single centralized authority.

Second, verifiable credentials (VCs) enable agents to receive cryptographically signed credentials attesting to their capabilities and permissions. This enables fine-grained access control.

Third, zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) allow agents to prove claims about their identity or permissions without revealing sensitive data. This preserves privacy.

Fourth, the agent naming service (ANS) is a decentralized directory system that securely resolves agent identities and queries their attributes.

Together, these elements create a system where trust is continuously evaluated and based on verified evidence instead of static credentials or blind trust.

Governance, Ethics, and Security Considerations

The paper also emphasizes the importance of governance and ethical frameworks. Managing a decentralized ecosystem of AI agents raises questions about who can issue authoritative credentials, how disputes are resolved, and how to prevent misuse. Extending the Concept to AI Agents

Now the question arises. Can this identity bubble concept apply to AI agents?

AI agents are not people. They do not have consciousness, emotions, or a consistent physical presence. They pursue goals, make decisions, and act independently. Their behavior is based on logic, training data, rules, and reward mechanisms. Clearly, some human-specific aspects of identity, such as biometric signals or emotional responses, do not apply.

However, patterns still exist. And they can be just as distinct and valuable.

AI agents have operational routines. They make decisions in repeatable ways. They access systems based on defined roles. Over time, they develop recognizable behavioral signatures, shaped by their design, environment, and objectives. These signatures offer a reliable way to build a protective layer similar to a human identity bubble.

Each AI agent should be treated as an identity, tagged with an owner, assigned access levels and permissions just like human users, and governed by outcomes and activities within the same identity framework. While the policies may differ, the foundational governance model remains consistent.

Can AI Agents Have Identity Bubbles

To apply this concept to AI agents, Genix Cyber focuses on profiling each agent’s functional and behavioral traits.

We start by defining what normal looks like for an agent. What are its core goals? What data does it access? How does it respond to changes in input or system behavior? What is its typical communication pattern?

These agents must be tagged with relevant metadata at creation, monitored during their activity, and formally decommissioned at termination. This lifecycle-based approach brings structure, traceability, and accountability to entities that may exist only for seconds or minutes.

Ephemeral agents are commonly found in cloud-native environments such as containers and serverless functions, where thousands can be spun up and shut down rapidly. Their transient nature makes traditional IAM tools ineffective, as persistent identities or long-lived sessions are not practical.

Despite their fleeting existence, these agents still display recognizable behavioral patterns. Genix Cyber envisions tagging them with contextual attributes such as workload identifiers, container images, or deployment context to ensure their actions remain visible. Real-time behavioral fingerprinting becomes central to this approach. By tracking command sequences, system interactions, and access patterns, organizations can detect anomalies and take immediate action. If an agent behaves unexpectedly, the system can terminate the process, revoke temporary credentials, or log the event for further analysis.

Treating ephemeral agents as part of the identity fabric ensures visibility, policy enforcement, and rapid response in even the most dynamic environments.
